Brazil and Rio Reflections

Submitted by Lottie on Sat, 2010-07-17 08:07

I planned to spend one month in Bahia experiencing the deep symbiotic relation to nature that permaculture pointed to, for me. To continue learning capoeira with masters as a way to deepen my understanding of how one can acquire another’s culture and experience by emulating their body movements. I then intended to live for three months in Rio to subjectively explore the emotional and psychological landscape of the city and investigate the idea that “the favela is the university of malandragem” as I was told by one of the many people I had previously quizzed on the subject.

At the start of the residency I wrote
“My ways of inhabiting my body will change but some will stay the same. As I change within the currents and interplays of self, environment and culture how much control do I have over this process?”

Dominoes Supporters

On November 19th 2009 Fabio Salvatti led a Street Training session in Curitiba, Brazil.

The session was part of Festival de Cultura do Paraná, a huge event that gathered music, theater, visual arts, dance, performance and eco-politics.

This was the first session that happened in Curitiba, in which were trained different street skills, such as domino supporting, tree climbing, hide and seek, etc. The trainers were very enthusiastic about it, and plan to continue with regular sessions.

One night here in Rio at a private view for a gallery called Gentil Carioca spontaneously I orchestrated my friends to lift up my friend Lila and we carried her off held on our shoulders. We walked along together a little girl hanging out of the doorway smiled at us, we proceeded to climb scaffolding play and swing off it.
